Who would have thought that in August the temperature would be so pleasant and the air so clear here in Redding, CA that one could actually sit outside (in the shade, of course) enjoying it? Last year at this time the fire season was in full swing. Anyone going outside needed to wear a smoke mask. Smoke from fires both near and far filled the air. With a fire that jumped the Sacramento River and I-5, as well as the “firenado” whose eerie glow filled the sky for miles, no one could be sure of a safe place. Many were evacuating, others were preparing in case they had to. Four of my friends were among those who lost their homes in that fire.
This year the fire teams and general population are more prepared and alert, watching for and pouncing on any fire as soon as it gets started. Last year taught us a heavy lesson, and brought us together as a community. The enemy was not the Republicans or the Democrats, but the fire. When your life is at stake, the greedy issues of politics are so trivial. Knowing that all of your earthly possessions could be gone in minutes, as well as your life, and those you love, priorities are suddenly clearer.
Who has time to holler “hate” or “racism” when you and your neighbors are either fleeing destruction or helping those who need help in the flight?
